Exciting Afternoon

October 4, 2011 by · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

Yesterday was quite exciting at the junior high. The power was out in the building for a bit and made for a fun afternoon. In Language Arts we were still able to take notes off the board, but I was exhausted having to do it the “old fashioned way” and not use my technology. When it came to silent reading, we headed outside in the sun so we wouldn’t have to strain our eyes. I’m not sure what other classes were able to accomplish, but I’m happy to report that the afternoon group was awesome and we still carried on with everything we needed to do.

Writing Assignment Update

October 1, 2011 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

I wanted to send an email to all parents letting them know to please pass on the message that I have extended the due date for the short story partner writing, but I’ve accidentally deleted my parent contact list!

As of Friday, it was due Monday. I am extending the due date to Friday 10/7. I hope this helps resolve some of the conflicts that pop up when working with another person to meet a deadline. Please spread the word!

4th Week of School

September 22, 2011 by · 12 Comments · Uncategorized

Monday – We went to the Mac Lab for a Math MAP Test.

Tuesday – Went over nouns, then took a verbs pre-test.

Wednesday – We had a sub for Mrs. Tonelli his name was Mr. Plese and we all really liked him. He’s a CJHS graduate! We also watched Ransom of Red Chief and then took the test over plot, conflict, and the two stories  we’d read.

Thursday – Mrs. Tonelli put us in groups for our A, B,C, D stations. In our groups we worked on grammar, spelling, reading skills, and did some silent reading. The silent reading group got to play a game half the time, too. After stations, we learned about genre and worked in groups to figure out the genre of different types of stories.

Friday – We did stations again, but rotated to the next stop. We also turned in our Weekly Writing and got the next assignment.

Week Three

September 12, 2011 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Week 3 of school FLEW BY! It was a 4 day week, so that’s probably why it seemed to go so quickly. We read a goofy story called the Ransom of Red Chief which can be found in the links section. It’s about a kid who is kidnapped, but ends up being a pain for the kid-nappers. It reminded us of the movie Home Alone.

We finished our nouns unit and took our first big test. It wasn’t that hard, but it took a long time to finish. Mrs. Tonelli was really impressed with the scores! On Wednesday of this week, we’re taking a quiz about plot & conflict and the two stories we read.

This week is spirit week and more MAP testing. We’re all hoping it’s fun and goes as fast as last week.

Week in Review

September 5, 2011 by · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

This week of school went by fast, but we got a lot of stuff done. On Monday, we took our first MAP test of the year. It was our reading session. Right after that, we went to the library to learn about everything. To start our English day on Tuesday, we played a fun noun game. Following that, we watched a crazy noun video. Right as we walked in the door on Wednesday, we got out spelling books. To end English class, we did a rough draft for our Rikki-Tikki-Tavi plot. Thursday was a laid back, funny day. Mainly because I got to wear a poncho in class. At the end of English, we did our final draft for our Rikki- Rikki-Tavi plot posters.

The First Week of School

This week was a great week. I asked some other students and they agreed. We went on Brainpop.com and mrstonelli.com. We talked about the different types of nouns, read Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, and did worksheets on the Schwa sound.

What’d you miss?

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to open house. I always enjoy meeting the parents of my students!

Your children have been doing such a great job in our class so far this year. They seem to be a very dedicated bunch and are anxious to move on the next activity. This is a fabulous trait in this class, because we sure do a lot of different things on any given day. We are studying FOUR subjects in 88 minutes per day – grammar, literature, spelling/vocab and writing.

For those who were unable to attend, I’ve attached the handouts I shared last night to this post. They go over some of the other things I talked about. I also walked through this class webpage to highlight the lesson extras on the bottom right of the screen, the assignments along with electronic documents on the left hand side of the screen, the links to Channahon sites that will help you access all things regarding CJHS and not just our class, and additional educational sites that will be helpful for all subject areas.

Please feel free to contact me about anything regarding your child at any time. The easiest for me is email, but some matters are more easily discussed over the phone or in person. I’m available for whichever you prefer.
